This 2-day chimp trekking safari offers an exciting escape into the rich biodiversity of Kibale National Park, known as the primate capital of the world. The journey from Kampala takes you through picturesque landscapes before arriving at Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided nature walk. The highlight of the trip is the thrilling chimpanzee trekking experience, allowing for close encounters with these intelligent primates in their natural environment. The safari concludes with a return to Kampala, making it an ideal short yet memorable wildlife adventure.

Itineraries

Day 1

: Transfer from Kampala to Kibale National Park and Bigodi Swamp Walk

 

Depart from Kampala in the morning and embark on a scenic drive to Kibale National Park, located in western Uganda. The journey takes approximately five to six hours, passing through lush countryside, rolling hills, tea plantations, and local villages. A stopover in Fort Portal allows for a brief rest and lunch before proceeding to the park.

Upon arrival, check in at the lodge and refresh before heading to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary for a guided swamp walk. This ecotourism site is home to a variety of primates, including colobus monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, and vervet monkeys, as well as an impressive array of bird species such as the great blue turaco. The walk offers a chance to observe the rich biodiversity of the area and interact with the local community. After the swamp walk, return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation in preparation for the next day’s chimpanzee trekking adventure.

Day 2

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest and Transfer Back to Kampala

Wake up early for breakfast before heading to the Kibale National Park headquarters for a briefing on chimpanzee trekking guidelines. Accompanied by experienced guides and rangers, venture into the dense rainforest in search of habituated chimpanzee groups. The trek can take between two to four hours, depending on the movement of the chimps. Once located, spend an unforgettable hour observing their behaviours, social interactions, and playful antics in their natural habitat. The experience also provides an opportunity to encounter other primates and various bird species.

After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before checking out and beginning the journey back to Kampala. The drive follows the same scenic route, with an optional stop in Fort Portal for souvenirs or a short visit to a tea plantation. Arrive in Kampala in the evening, marking the end of the chimp trekking adventure.
