This one-day adventure takes you to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can track wild rhinos on foot. Located about 170 kilometres from Kampala along the route to Murchison Falls National Park, the sanctuary is home to Uganda’s only population of southern white rhinos. The experience offers a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures up close while learning about conservation efforts to reintroduce rhinos into the wild.

Day 1
Rhino Trekking

The journey begins early in the morning with a departure from Kampala, heading north towards Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The drive takes approximately three hours through beautiful countryside and small rural towns. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, a briefing is conducted by experienced guides before heading out for an on-foot rhino tracking adventure.
The tracking experience lasts between one and two hours, depending on the location of the rhinos. Walking through the sanctuary with an armed ranger, you will get up close to the rhinos in their natural habitat while learning about their behaviours, conservation efforts, and the history of rhino reintroduction in Uganda. Along the way, you may also spot other wildlife, including antelopes, bushbucks, and a variety of bird species.
After the tracking experience, enjoy a delicious lunch at the sanctuary’s restaurant or a packed picnic lunch in a scenic spot. After lunch, there is an option to take a nature walk or a canoe ride to explore the sanctuary’s wetlands, which are home to the rare shoebill stork and other bird species.
In the afternoon, begin the return journey to Kampala, arriving in the early evening, marking the end of an exciting day at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary.
