Patas Monkeys in Uganda – The Fastest Monkeys on Earth

The Fastest Monkeys on Earth

In the vast open savannahs of Uganda, a unique and rarely seen primate sprints through the tall grass with unmatched speed, the Patas monkey. Known as the fastest monkey in the world, the Patas monkey is a fascinating species that adds a special thrill to Uganda’s wildlife encounters.

Meet the Patas Monkey

The Patas monkey (Erythrocebus patas) is a slender, long-limbed primate with a reddish-brown coat, white underbelly, and a black face bordered by a white mustache. Adult males are significantly larger than females and can weigh up to 13 kg.

Unlike many other monkeys that prefer dense forests, Patas monkeys thrive in open woodlands and savannahs, making them one of the few truly terrestrial primates in Africa.

Where to See Patas Monkeys in Uganda

In Uganda, Patas monkeys are mainly found in the north-eastern parts of the country, particularly in:

Because they prefer open grasslands, spotting them requires a keen eye and sometimes a bit of luck. But when you do, it’s worth the wait!

What Makes Them Unique?

One of the most fascinating facts about Patas monkeys is their speed, they can run at speeds of up to 55 km/h (34 mph), faster than any other monkey species on the planet. This speed is essential for escaping predators like leopards, eagles, and wild dogs in the open savannah.

Patas monkeys live in groups typically made up of females and their young, led by a single dominant male. However, males often roam alone or join bachelor groups after being pushed out of the troop.

They feed mainly on acacia seeds, insects, fruit, and gum, and are most active during the day.

A Rare but Rewarding Sighting

Because of their shy nature and preference for remote habitats, seeing a Patas monkey in Uganda is a special and rare experience, one that rewards the curious traveler with a glimpse into a lesser-known side of the country’s wildlife diversity.

So if you’re planning a safari to Kidepo or Pian Upe, keep your binoculars ready and your eyes on the savannah, the Patas monkey might just race into view.
