FIGHTING POLLUTION IN UGANDA

A Call to Action

Pollution is a growing challenge in Uganda, especially in rapidly urbanizing areas like Kampala, Jinja, and Gulu. From plastic waste and air pollution to contaminated water bodies, pollution affects public health, agriculture, tourism, and the natural environment.

One of the biggest threats is plastic pollution. In towns and cities, non-biodegradable plastic bags and bottles are commonly seen littering streets, clogging drainage systems, and polluting rivers and lakes, including Lake Victoria. Improper disposal of waste from households, markets, and industries contributes to both land and water pollution.

Air pollution is also rising due to increased traffic, old vehicles emitting smoke, and burning of waste. This leads to respiratory problems and contributes to climate change. In rural areas, indoor air pollution from cooking with firewood or charcoal continues to impact the health of women and children.

To fight pollution, Uganda has taken several steps. The ban on plastic bags, though still poorly enforced, was a good start. Organizations and youth groups are promoting recycling, plastic collection, and awareness campaigns in schools and communities. The government is also encouraging cleaner energy solutions like solar power and energy-saving stoves.

Communities can play a big role by reducing plastic use, properly disposing of waste, planting trees, and using reusable materials. Clean-up drives, tree planting, and environmental clubs in schools are helping to build a culture of environmental responsibility.

Fighting pollution in Uganda requires a combined effort from government, businesses, schools, and citizens. By acting now, we can protect our health, wildlife, and natural beauty. A cleaner Uganda is possible — one action, one voice, and one community at a time.
