Understanding Flight Cancellations in Uganda
Flight cancellations in Uganda have recently become a significant issue, affecting both local and international travelers. A key culprit is crew shortages at the national carrier, Uganda Airlines. Around late 2023 and early 2024, the airline confirmed that while it had enough aircraft, it simply did not have enough pilots and crew to maintain scheduled flights. To comply with safety regulations, several flights particularly during peak periods like December were either delayed or canceled to prevent crew from working beyond legal limits.
The root cause is clear: the airline has struggled to recruit adequately. There were only 13 pairs of captains and first officers, far too few to sustain normal operations. Even after advertising for more crew, just four applicants were deemed qualified and hired. Uganda Airlines has since announced plans to double its crew numbers to prevent future disruptions.
Security concerns have also led to flight cancellations most notably the suspension of flights to Kinshasa in January 2025, triggered by escalating conflict and violence near the Ugandan embassy. This highlights that airline disruptions may sometimes stem from regional instability, not just internal resource constraints.
Passengers in Uganda often vent frustrations on forums and social media. A socialite, Zari Hassan, condemned sudden schedule changes and last-minute cancellations that disrupted her travel plans, accusing the airline of poor communication and declining service quality. Other travelers have shared similar experiences of abrupt cancellations and unfriendly staff, showing how travel plans can be derailed by both operational issues and customer service failings.
Uganda Airlines is now implementing structural changes: hiring more pilots, upgrading its crew management system, and streamlining scheduling. The goal is to eliminate avoidable cancellations and improve reliability. For travelers, the best strategy for now is to book early, stay updated, and have backup plans in case of disruptions.
