LOWLAND GORILLAS IN EAST AFRICA

Elusive Giants of the Forest

While East Africa is world-renowned for its mountain gorillas, particularly in Uganda and Rwanda, lowland gorillas are a rarer sight in the region. Most lowland gorillas are found in Central Africa — especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) — but eastern parts of Congo bring them close enough to be considered part of the East African ecological landscape.

There are two types of lowland gorillas: the Western lowland gorilla and the Eastern lowland gorilla (also called Grauer’s gorilla). It is the Eastern lowland gorilla that inhabits the eastern DRC, particularly in Kahuzi-Biega National Park, near Bukavu. These majestic primates are the largest of all gorilla subspecies and are recognized by their stocky build, shorter arms, and deep, expressive eyes.

Eastern lowland gorillas are forest dwellers, living in dense tropical jungles at lower altitudes compared to their mountain cousins. They feed on fruits, leaves, stems, and bark, playing a crucial role in seed dispersal and maintaining the health of forest ecosystems. They live in stable family groups led by a dominant silverback, who protects the troop and ensures social harmony.

Sadly, Eastern lowland gorillas are critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, mining, and decades of conflict in the DRC. Conservation efforts, led by park rangers, researchers, and international organizations, are working tirelessly to protect their habitats and support local communities.

Though not as accessible as the mountain gorillas in Uganda or Rwanda, lowland gorillas offer a profoundly wild and raw experience for those venturing deep into Congo’s forests. Protecting these incredible primates is not just about saving a species — it’s about preserving the integrity of East Africa’s rich and irreplaceable natural heritage.
