THE MYSTERIOUS CRATER OF RUBIRIZI
Tucked away in the rolling volcanic landscape of Rubirizi District, Lake Rutoto—also locally known as Lake Nkugute—is a fascinating crater lake renowned for its unique shape that closely resembles the map of Africa. Locals call it “Nkugute,” meaning “swallow” in the Runyaruguru dialect, inspired by eerie folklore that claims the lake mysteriously “swallows” a boy and a girl each year. Some even say that anyone who attempts to rescue those drowning also meets a similar fate. While such tales have created a mystical aura around the lake, they also serve as warnings about its deep waters and unpredictable conditions.
Beyond the legends, Lake Rutoto plays a vital role in the surrounding community. It supports fishing, with species like tilapia and mudfish commonly harvested by local fishermen. Its fertile shores are lined with banana plantations, coffee shrubs, and pine trees, contributing to the area’s agricultural livelihood.
Scenic hills such as Imaramagambo, Omunkombe, and Ryemondo encircle the lake, offering beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere. However, like many natural resources, the lake faces environmental challenges. Encroachment, farming, and domestic activities have caused water pollution and reduced its size.
