Discover Katonga Wildlife Reserve

Uganda’s Hidden Wilderness

Tucked away in Uganda’s western region along the Katonga River, this 211 km² wildlife reserve was officially gazetted in 1998 and is managed by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Unique for its mosaic of savannah, wetlands, riverine woodlands, and papyrus swamps, Katonga offers a tranquil alternative to Uganda’s busier parks.

Wildlife Highlights

Katonga supports a diverse range of animals and birds:

  • Sitatunga antelope – a rare semi‑aquatic species thriving in swampy habitats.
  • Common mammals like elephants, waterbuck, reedbuck, bushbuck, hippos, buffalo, otters, Uganda kob, and warthogs.
  • Primates including black-and-white colobus, olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and even the elusive blue monkey.
  • A bird-lover’s paradise with 150+ species, such as great bittern, goliath heron, African fish eagle, and the elusive shoebill.

Top Activities

Katonga encourages low-impact, intimate wildlife experiences:

  • Guided nature walks (e.g. Sitatunga Trail, Kisharara Trail, Kyeibale Trail) to explore swamp edges, forests, and rock valleys on foot.
  • Canoe excursions along the Katonga River—perfect for spotting hippos, otters, birds, and possibly sitatunga.
  • Bird-watching outings, ideal in early morning or late afternoons when the avian activity peaks.
  • Game drives on the fringes of the reserve offer sightings of general wildlife in savannah and wetland areas.
  • Community visits: engage with locals, learn about Banyankore traditions, and witness how conservation and livelihoods intersect.

How to Get There & Stay

Katonga sits ~200–235 km west of Kampala (about a 4-hour scenic drive via Kyegegwa or Kamwenge).
Accommodations include basic Uganda Wildlife Authority‑run campsite (Kabangole) inside the reserve or budget lodges like Katonga View Lodge, Crater Safari Lodge, and more nearby in Kamwenge or Kyenjojo.
