Discover Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

Uganda’s Scenic Hideaway

Nestled between the Albertine Rift escarpment and Lake Albert in Hoima District, Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve spans approximately 87 km² and was gazetted in 1980, officially becoming a wildlife reserve in 2002. This lesser-known reserve offers a serene, intimate safari experience away from the crowds.

Breathtaking Landscape

Kabwoya’s terrain is a mix of open savannah, undulating hills, rugged escarpments, and the pristine shoreline of Lake Albert—backdropped by the Blue Mountains of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The reserve’s beauty makes it ideal for nature walks, photography, and quiet wildlife viewing.

Wildlife Encounters

The reserve is home to a diverse array of mammals:

  • Ugandan kob, bushbuck, waterbuck, oribi, and Jackson’s hartebeest roam the grassy plains.
  • Buffalo, warthogs, bush pigs, duikers, and giant forest hogs add to the varied wildlife mix.
  • You might spot predators like leopards and hyenas, and primates such as chimpanzees, baboons, vervet monkeys, and both black-and-white colobus monkeys along riverine forests.

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Kabwoya hosts over 460 bird species, including Albertine Rift endemics like Rwenzori turaco, stripe-breasted tit, handsome francolin, and African pitta. It’s a prime destination for avid birders with binoculars in hand.
