Uganda Wildlife Education Centre

A Gateway to Conservation and Learning

The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (UWEC), located in Entebbe along the shores of Lake Victoria, is a unique facility that combines wildlife conservation, education, and tourism. Originally established in 1952 as a reception center for rescued and injured animals, UWEC has evolved into a leading conservation and education hub in East Africa.

UWEC serves as a sanctuary for a wide range of wildlife species, including lions, elephants, giraffes, chimpanzees, rhinos, and various reptiles and birds. Most of the animals at the center were rescued from poachers or illegal wildlife trade, and many cannot return to the wild due to injury or lack of survival skills. The center provides a safe and naturalistic environment that mimics their native habitats, allowing them to live comfortably while educating the public.

One of UWEC’s primary roles is conservation education. Through guided tours, school programs, and interactive exhibits, the center teaches visitors—especially young Ugandans—about the importance of wildlife, ecosystems, and sustainable living. It plays a critical role in raising awareness about endangered species and the threats they face, such as habitat loss and poaching.

Visitors can also enjoy behind-the-scenes experiences such as the Keeper for a Day program or chimpanzee close-up encounters, which offer a deeper understanding of animal care and behavior. UWEC also participates in breeding programs and collaborates with local and international partners on wildlife research and conservation efforts.

For both tourists and locals, a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre offers a fun, informative, and meaningful experience. It’s not just a zoo—it’s a place where conservation comes alive, inspiring a new generation to care for and protect Uganda’s rich biodiversity.
