Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, located in southwestern Uganda, is one of the most famous destinations for mountain gorilla trekking in the world. Covering over 320 square kilometers of dense rainforest, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. To manage tourism and conservation efforts effectively, the park is divided into four main sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo.
Buhoma, located in the northern part of the park, is the most popular and oldest sector. It was the first area where gorilla trekking began in Uganda in 1993. Buhoma is known for its accessibility, established tourism infrastructure, and a variety of lodging options.
Ruhija, situated in the eastern part of the park, is quieter and offers a more serene trekking experience. It is known for its high-altitude terrain and rich biodiversity, making it ideal for both gorilla trekking and birdwatching.
Rushaga, found in the southern sector, is notable for having the highest number of habituated gorilla families. It also offers gorilla habituation experiences, where visitors can spend extended time with gorillas under the guidance of researchers.
Nkuringo, also in the south, is known for its challenging terrain and incredible scenic views of the Virunga Mountains and surrounding landscapes. This sector appeals to adventurous travelers looking for a more physically demanding trek.
Each sector operates independently with separate park entrances, gorilla groups, and trekking permits. Visitors are assigned a specific sector based on availability and preference.
These four sectors together offer diverse experiences, helping to distribute tourism evenly across the park while protecting the fragile habitat of the endangered mountain gorillas.
